CLASSES AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER
New for 2009 are some classes to be held at the Wickliffe Community/Senior Center, 900 Worden Road, in the evenings. Some ideas given to the department for new classes were flower arranging, rubber stamping, basic internet, home repair projects, automobile upkeep, and financial assistance for the general public. If you are interested in any of the above or you have an interest in learning a certain craft, or life enhancing project, let us know by calling the Recreation Department at 943-7120 or e-mail tstopp@cityofwickliffe.com.

Yoga: Learn and practice Basic Yoga postures. Basic Yoga teaches basic strengthening and toning postures put together in a sequence that flows, while observing your breathing, improves strength, focus, balance flexibility and relaxation. Bring a water bottle & a mat. Wear casual clothes.Instructor: Annette Santoro
Session starts: July 20, Mondays: 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Fee: $40 for 7 classes

Zumba: Do you know Zumba? Here’s your chance to learn the newest fitness routine-an intensely fun workout combining cha-cha, salsa, reggae, and hip-hop dance moves with a few traditional moves. You’ll burn calories, laugh, dance and enjoy moving to energetic music. Class is great for teens and adults. Bring a water bottle & towel and wear good exercise shoes.Instructor: Annette Santoro
Session starts: July 22, Wednesdays: 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Fee: $40 for 7 classes

Tai Chi Ch’uan: Tai Chi Ch’uan is a centuries old classic form of Chinese exercise practiced world wide for health, longevity and the development of physical and mental well being. It is enjoyed by people of all ages. Instructor: Paul J. Wallace
Starts Monday, July 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (8-week sessions)
Held at Wickliffe Community/Senior Center
Fee: $30 a person or $39 for husband and wife or parent and sibling if signing up together.

“Health for Life” Aerobics: Age tailored fitness aerobic class, hour long, safe and fun class which strengthens and tones muscles, reduces body fat, reduces stress, improves cardiovascular endurance and feels good all over. Instructor: Kathy Brown
Session II starts August 4, Tuesdays: 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Held at Wickliffe Community/Senior Center
Fee: $25 for 5 classes

Polynesian Dance Classes: Learn the modern and ancient hula to enhance your grace and poise, as well as strengthen, and tone your body. Instructor: Dahmia
Session II starts August 6, Thursdays: 6:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
Held at Wickliffe Community/Senior Center
Fee: $40 for 8 week classes

Turkish Dance Classes: Learn exotic Turkish dancing while you tone and tighten your muscles. This is a fun way to exercise and learn to dance at the same time. Instructed by Dahmia.
Session II starts August 6. Thursdays: 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm
 FEE:  $40.00 for 8 classes
Held at Wickliffe Community Center.

Heartsaver CPR & AED
CPR/AED is an American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR, for the general public who want to earn a 2-year certification. Fee is $15. Call for upcoming class dates. Must register at least one week in advance. Must have 6 to hold the class. No walk-ins.  Held at the Wickliffe Fire Department, 29885 Euclid Ave. Register by calling the Fire Department at 943-7140.

SAFETY TOWN
Safety Town is a comprehensive education program that introduces safety awareness and preventive procedures to children entering kindergarten or first grade.  Our program operates under the direction and guidelines of the National Safety Town Center. The children will be taught safety education through proper and effective teaching techniques. Lessons will be held on the miniature “town” with streets, traffic signals, signs, buildings, and “automobile traffic” (tricycles) will reinforce the traffic and pedestrian rules taught in  class. Classes will meet in the Wickliffe Elementary School. Classes will meet for 10 consecutive days (Monday thru Friday)  for 1 ½ hours per day and will conclude with a graduation ceremony. CAMPS
SUMMER DAY CAMP - June 15 – August 7
Held Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, Summer Day Camp is an eight-week program for children entering grades 1 thru 6 during the 2009-2010 school year. A fun-filled summer is planned with various activities such as games, swimming, contests, fishing, crafts, nature activities, field trips (for an additional fee) and much more. The headquarters for day camp is beautiful Coulby Park. The pavilion by the pond is where children are to be taken in the morning and picked up in the evening. When there is inclement weather the Recreation Hall above the old fire station is where the children will be taken. Information fliers and registration forms are available in the Recreation Department. Camp Director: Michelle Jones.
Fee: Residents: $85 per week for first child in family, $55 for each additional child in family. $60 for two days for first child in family, $40 for two days for each additional child in family.
Non-resident:  $130 per week for each child, $90 for two days for each child in family. Additional charges for extended hours. All campers must purchase a pool pass separately. HORSEBACK RIDING CAMP - June 8 - August 24
Week long camp with lessons that cover basic feeding, cleaning, grooming, health care and show prepartion. FEE: $337 per week

HORSEBACK RIDING LESSONS - July 8, 11 and 12

English riding (hunt seat).  Learn to walk and trot in an indoor  riding program that can be continued all year.  Recommended for students 8 yrs. & up.  For more details, call Maypine at 216-695-0604. Held at Maypine Equestrian Center, 32700 White Rd., Willoughby Hills, OH. FEE:  $197.00 for 8 week session. LIGHTNING YOUTH SOCCER CAMP - August 3 - 7
For the past 22 years the Lightning Soccer Camp has been giving young players the opportunity to enjoy the game. The camp goal is to  better their skills and focus on the fun aspect of the game. For boys and girls currently in grades K through 8. The camp is run by former Wickliffe resident, John Scramling, the Brush High School Boys Varsity Soccer Coach. Coach Scramling holds both USSF and NSCAA coaching licenses. Fee includes camp t-shirt and soccer ball.  Held at Orlando Park from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. Registering for Programs
Pre-registration is necessary for all programs and classes. We accept phone registrations for certain classes, followed by payment within five days to hold the spot in the class. Swimming lessons, camps, and clinics register in person only. Send payments for classes (after you pre-register over the phone) to the Wickliffe Recreation Department, 28730 Ridge Rd., Wickliffe, OH 44092. Make checks payable to the City of Wickliffe. Unless noted in each description, registration for class is now in progress.

Cancellation of Classes
Each instructor determines the size of the class he/she wishes to teach. If classes must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, those who have prepaid will be notified and refunds will be made.

Make-Up Classes
If an instructor must postpone a class, a make-up lesson will be scheduled. If the student misses a class, most programs will not allow for make-up.

Refunds
No refunds will be made after the first class meeting commences unless instructor gives permission.

SPECIAL EVENTS

MOVIES IN THE PARK - June 19 & July 24
June 26th movie - "Hotel for Dogs" - 8:45 PM
A big screen movie will be shown at dusk on Friday, July 24th at Coulby Park, concession stand will be open or bring your picnic basket. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets. Business Sponsors needed, we are looking for sponsors for the Movie Nights; any business interested in making a monetary donation should contact the Recreation Department.

FISHING DERBY - Wednesday, July 8th
“Free”, Rain or Shine! Register from 8:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. Derby held 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wickliffe children up to 15 years old are invited to test their fishing skills at Coulby Pond. Several prizes will be presented with special awards for the biggest fish and most caught. Bring your own fishing rod and bait.

FUN IN OUR PARKS PHOTO CONTEST
We have seven beautiful parks in our city and we want to know how our residents spend their time or what they like about our parks. Use your camera to capture what you think is great about Wickliffe parks. Photos must be submitted by September 1, 2009. Only one entry per household. Name, address, phone number and location of where photo was taken must be submitted with a 4” x 6” photo. (Do not print on back of photo). Photos will remain the property of the Recreation Department and photos may be used in future Recreation publications. This contest is sponsored by Dodd Camera & Video, 7521 Mentor Ave., Mentor, Ohio. Prizes will be awarded for each of the seven park photos.

 Recreation Events

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME - July 13
Monday, July 13th will be “Wickliffe” night at the Captain’s game. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased through the Recreation Dept. It is $1 hot dog and drink night. Come in and purchase tickets during Recreation Department hours.

33rd ANNUAL ARTS & CRAFT FAIR will be held Friday, October 2 from 4pm to 9pm and Saturday, October 3 from 9am to 4pm. Over 56 crafters will be on display. $2 admission. Partial proceeds to “Lights on Afterschool” a Wickliffe Middle School Program.

Wickliffe Rail Day Express will be held again this year. Wickliffe residents-gather your family and friends on October 17th to take a train ride and enjoy the fall colors of the Cuyahoga Valley. Details will be available in the July issue of the Wickliffe Connection.


CITY OF WICKLIFFE - CABLE CHANNEL 12
Cable 12 is the channel to view all of the events taking place in Wickliffe. If you belong to a Wickliffe non-profit organization, take advantage of this FREE service. The form below must be filled out. Only the facts (include dates and times), cost and phone number can be advertised. Click here to open the form and follow the instructions to advertise your event. Please note that this is a new form as of August 2008 and must be completed according to the format for your event to appear on Cable Channel 12.


BUS TRIPS

Bus trips are offered through the Recreation Department and Lakefront Lines, Inc. Before I arrange for trips I would like to know how many people would be interested in the following trips. Once the number of people for each trip reaches the minimum number of 34 – 40 people I will follow up with those on the list. Wednesday, September 23:
“Miss Emma’s Table”, Columbus, OH.
Be a guest at “Miss Emma’s Table” named for a local socialite who lived beside the Ohio Statehouse in the 1800’s. You’ll be treated to an old-fashioned boardinghouse style meal and meet prominent figures from Ohio’s history on a guided tour. $48 each.

Once trips are finalized, those who called in with an interest will be notified and itineraries will be available. To hold your space for a trip, please make checks payable to Lakefront Lines, Inc. and mail them to Ronnie Bubonics at 28730 Ridge Rd., Wickliffe 44092. Lakefront requires deposits from the Recreation Department, so checks must be in our office at least one month prior to each trip (deadline for each trip will be one month prior to trip). COMMUNITY SPORTS
This is a community information list only. These are Wickliffe based organizations that serve Wickliffe residents. The City does not run these organizations. Please use the contact numbers below to receive additional information about the league or sport.

Wickliffe Soccer Club (Grades K-6)
The Wickliffe Soccer Club offers competitive soccer leagues for players of any ability and experience level. Seasons begin in the fall and last about two months, then continue in the spring for approximately six weeks.
Divisions are as follows:
U8 (Coed): For players in kindergarten through 2nd grade. Format is 7v7 and games are played on the youth soccer field at Coulby Park. The $25 fee includes a team shirt.
U10 (Boys/Coed): Players cannot turn 10 before Aug. 1st. Format is 8v8 and home games are played on the Borromeo field on Bishop Road. Away games are played at a variety of fields around Western Lake County. The $65 fee includes a team uniform (shirts, shorts and socks).
U12 (Boys/Coed): Players cannot turn 12 before Aug. 1st. Format is 8v8 and home games are played on the Borromeo field on Bishop Road. Away games are played at a variety of fields around Western Lake County and Eastern Cuyahoga County. The $65 fee includes a team uniform (shirts, shorts and socks).
G12 (Girls only): Players cannot turn 12 before Aug. 1st. This division is generally for girls in the third through sixth grades. Format is 8v8 and home games are played on the Borromeo field on Bishop Road. Away games are played at a variety of fields around Western Lake County and Eastern Cuyahoga County. The $65 fee includes a team uniform (shirts, shorts and socks).

Wickliffe Baseball League, meets 3rd Tuesday of Month at 7:30 pm. at Provo House, 28855 Euclid Ave.
SIGNUPS: Registrations end March 1st. Walk-in registrations will be held on all Saturdays in February from 10am – 12 Noon at the Provo House – 28855 Euclid Ave
DIVISIONS: Baseball is offered for boys ages 7–18 and softball, fast-pitch and coach-pitch, is offered for girls ages 7 -14.
