Health and Human Services Assistance - Dial 211
Lake County has made this information service possible through collaboration with United Way, the Lake County Commissioners and the Lake County ADAMHS Board. By dialing 211 or local numbers (440) 953-5465 or (800)654-5465, you are connected to a person with vast knowledge of the health and human resources available in our Community. In 2006, over 23,500 calls for help were taken...a 26% increase over 2005. The information is free and confidential, 24 hours a day, every day. You can also visit their website at www.211lake.org

HEAP PROGRAM
More Ohioans will be able to get help paying their heating bills this winter. The Ohio Department of Development has increased the income level guidelines so that more people will be eligible for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).

Households are eligible for HEAP assistance if their income is at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, an increase from the previous level of 175 percent.  This means the program will help heat more homes this winter.

HEAP provides a one-time payment for the current winter heating season.  Households with elderly or disabled members may qualify for a larger amount of assistance.

A special component of HEAP, the Winter Crisis Program,is administered by Community Action agencies throughout Ohio. The Winter Crisis Program provides assistance once per heating season to eligible households that are disconnected, threatened with disconnection, or have less than a 10 day supply of bulk fuel.

For more information about HEAP or to apply for assistance, call the toll free hotline at 1-800-282-0880, Monday through Friday.

The Lake County Council on Aging provides care and service for older adults. This agency is dedicated to supporting those adults feeling isolated, living alone, and in need of some type of assistance to their independence. The Gatekeeper Program has been designed by community volunteers to watch and listen for the signs that indicate an elderly person is in need of assistance. Once a referral is received, it is reviewed by a nurse and a social worker who discuss the action to be taken. A referral is then made to other resources in the community. If the plan is accepted by the elder, ongoing case management is received and followed for a minimum of three months.

If you know of an elder who needs assistance or if you would like to become a Gatekeeper, contact the Lake County Council on Aging at 440-205-8111.
